My Library Project
This year we had to design a library in the beautiful city of St. Andrew. We were offered a choice of 3 different sites. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, we could not visit this city and study each of the sites. This made our task more difficult.
For my project, I chose a site on one of the central streets, Market Street. I found this site more interesting than others, because it is a place where there are many different shops and cafes, cars are passing by, it is noisy here, but most importantly, there is no greenery here.
And creating a sustainable space was one of the main tasks. The building had to be environmentally friendly and cost effective. It also had to blend harmoniously with the surroundings of existing buildings.
I wanted to make a library surrounded by trees, flower beds, to add a little nature to the city.
I decided to make the library building in the form of books on a shelf. Books can be of different thicknesses and heights. Therefore, I visually divided the library into several parts that resemble books.
These images show how the library looks from all directions of the world and how it fits into the surroundings of this area. The south and east sides have large windows. On the west side, the library is located next to the existing building. Overall, I liked what I came up with. But I am missing something on the north side of the library. Perhaps a sign with the name of the library is needed? Maybe it was necessary to decorate this wall in pattern so that it does not look so massive?
This image shows what the library building looks like in the city. The building has many windows, including one on the roof. This allows natural light to enter the building and saves electricity. The library is surrounded by trees. There are also grass on the sidewalk, benches, and bike racks.
This and five other images show the interior of various rooms in the library. Here you can clearly see the layout of the interior, the color scheme, and the ingress of natural light into the premises. I tried to arrange all the premises necessary for this project as conveniently and practically as possible. I wanted the library to be convenient and comfortable, so that I would like to come here again and again.
