Green City

Rachael Okoh

I would like to describe this city through the lens of my native country. This is how I saw it when I arrived, to me it is a greener city compared to where I have lived all my life. The elements of Glasgow I saw may be invisible to others because views of the city were personal and based on how I interacted with the city.

The city has stone-finished, historic and symbolic buildings that I instantly fell in love with. The Glasgow cathedral, its history and the reason it stands really resonates with me. The feeling I got on Argyle Street on my first day in the city center was that of a happy and peaceful people. I immediately concurred to the slogan “People make Glasgow”, the street had lot of pedestrians that day, it reminded me of home.

My old location was Lagos State in Nigeria and I remember her people. The numerous people in my country make home “home”. Although our flag is colored “green”, we are lagging in green infrastructure development but our greatest asset is our People - they form closely-knitted groups, together they bring a laugh, a dance, a celebration. It is indeed a place of great people, of which I believe I am one of them.

Now in Glasgow the green element of the city I immediately see is the electrically powered transportation which drastically reduce carbon emissions because where I am from vehicles constitute a large portion of carbon emissions. I see street soccer that is improving the social life as people play soccer and I’m reminded that where I’m from street soccer is formed by groups of boys, girls or men who make a football out of anything and play away. I see efforts Glasgow makes to become a green city.
