Hidden City

Choy Wai Man

What are you doing at 2am? One in seven people were working nights in Britain and are essential to the running of our 24-hours society. Glasgow is one of the largest cities in England. The city can run 24 hours without resting because she has a group of people who work at the night when we are home, however, the stories of night worker seem never been told.

The drawings are about a story of taxi driver. He was looking on his phone to check any request from passengers as usual. There are over 20 requests at the midnight, and he has chosen an order from Glasgow Royal Infirmary to St Vincent Road. He played his favourite radio to keep him awake during the dark.

When he was 200 meters away from the hospital, a signed diversion route is placed on the front,” Essential carriageway repairs will be carried out until 7am, you must turn back to another route.” A man who wears a yellow vest said.  A woman walked along, and she was waving her hand to him. She got on his car and told him that she had a rough but happy experience tonight. The woman named Susan, who is a nurse and just delivered a healthy baby. She said most babies were born at night and the delivery room must be stood by every moment.

The city can’t operate without above people like taxi drivers, repair workers and nurses, which are often hidden in the night. They are generally not viewed as a desirable job as they need to work overnight and this may cause negative impact on their health and life. Its 3am now. The driver dropped Susan at her front door and ready for picking next passenger.
