PROJECT INFO

This final academic M.Arch project took place between September 20 and May 21, completed over both Semester 1 and Semester 2 of Year 5. The project sees the redevelopment and regeneration of the Charing Cross Complex (Elmbank Gardens) located in the Blythswood district of Glasgow. The final design proposition materialised from the initial Semester 1 research work and manifesto. The scheme synthesises a range of issues pertaining to the retrofitting of under-occupied urban buildings and spaces, and the infusion of more mixed uses into Glasgow city centre in response to the housing crisis, post-Covid pandemic recovery and climate emergency. The project identifies these contemporary urgencies and works within a local urban context to test and develop a design response which responds to the site conditions, whilst establishing an approach eminently transferable elsewhere in Glasgow and other cities post Covid-19.
